{HMW} Ditch the Motivation Trap: Unlock the Power of Momentum

Dear Reader

We all crave motivation—the surge of excitement that pushes us to take action. But for many, it’s fleeting, unreliable, and often vanishes as quickly as it arrives. We chase it, only to find it slipping away, showing up sporadically when we’re desperate or at rock bottom.

But there’s a better way: momentum.

Momentum is that powerful force that keeps you moving once you’ve taken the first step. Unlike motivation, it doesn’t rely on willpower or sheer force. It’s like a boat gliding effortlessly after a push.

However, momentum doesn’t just appear. It starts with action. Too often, we feel motivated but delay taking action, letting doubt and fear creep in. Over time, we sabotage ourselves, clinging to old patterns because they feel safe and familiar.

Here are six ways to skip the motivation trap and jumpstart momentum:

Take one small step despite fear—walk for 10 minutes, eat one vegetable, or set a timer and resist a bad habit for 20 minutes.

Focus on the process, not the outcome—visualize yourself taking action, like preparing ingredients for a healthy meal.

Celebrate every win—don’t wait for big milestones. Acknowledge and write down every small victory.

Act even when you don’t want to—any small action can keep momentum alive.

Find accountability—whether it’s an app, a buddy, or a coach, someone to keep you on track.

Expect setbacks and keep going—when they happen, don’t spiral into self-doubt. Show yourself compassion, and keep taking the next best step.

How do you stay motivated and build momentum with new habits?

Ingredient Spotlight:

Pluots

A pluot is a hybrid fruit that’s a cross between a plum and an apricot. The taste of a pluot is often described as a perfect blend of the two: it has the sweetness and juiciness of a plum with the subtle tartness of an apricot. Depending on the variety, some pluots can lean more toward the sweet side, with flavors reminiscent of honey or berries, while others have a bit more tanginess. The flesh is typically firm yet tender, making it a delightful balance of texture and taste.

Other Hybrid Fruits:

Tangelo: A cross between a tangerine and a pomelo or grapefruit. It’s juicy, sweet, and slightly tangy.

Aprium: Like the pluot, this fruit is also a plum-apricot hybrid but with more apricot characteristics, often sweeter and less tart.

Lemonquat: A cross between a lemon and a kumquat, offering a citrusy, slightly sweet flavor with an edible peel.

Pineberry: A white strawberry hybrid with a flavor that resembles pineapple.

Here are some dessert recipes featuring pluot inspiration!

Dear Reader A lot of people tell me they’re “all or nothing” when it comes to eating and exercise. It makes sense—we’re conditioned to think in extremes: success vs. failure, good vs. bad, happy vs. sad. But few of us naturally operate in the gray areas, especially when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. Our food culture complicates this. We swing between extreme restriction or overeating. We either run miles after a workout or sit on the couch, feeling stuck. The challenge is that...
