Dear Reader,

I inadvertently got to see the Boston marathoners on Monday when I attempted to pick up my daughter from a friend's house which happened to be right next to Heartbreak Hill. The roads were blocked off and my daughter couldn't even cross the street to get to my car. She was only 0.1 miles away and yet we could not get to each other! She even asked a police officer if she could scale the fence and dodge the runners in order to get to me!

I ended up having to drive 40-minutes, get on the highway and get to the far other side of the town in order to find a street to get to her.

Needless to say...it was stressful. My 20-minute errand ended up taking over 2.5 hours when all was said and done.

One of the things that is stress-trigger for me is the perception that I have wasted time - whether its from my own machinations of procrastination or real time external annoyances that I have no control over, like on Monday.

Can you relate to that?

Since it's Stress Awareness month, I thought it would be useful to spend some time being aware of and understanding your own stress-cues because they are different for everyone.

Here's what I did to mitigate the experience of stress.

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈWatched the marathoners and the revelers in my car when I still thought I'd be able to find a side road to grab her. Hard to be stressed when there are so many people excited and celebrating.

🎧Listened to my audiobook in the car on the highway - that way despite the disruption, I could still do something I enjoy

πŸ§˜πŸ»β€β™€οΈDid 2 minutes of psychological sighs to get the excess stress energy out.

While I certainly wasn't pleased with the situation, I handled the stress in a productive way which prevented me from spinning out, rushing or stressing out the rest of the day. (which has definitely happened in the past).

What are some of your go-to's to deal with situational stress?

Have it:

Interesting article alert: Pick up those Knitting needles everyone! "Why working with your hands is good for your brain

This is the coolest thing I've seen all week. Google arts and culture has an AI cultural dining mash-up app. Basically, you choose 2 countries that you'd like to create a fusion dish based on and AI whips up a unique recipe for you!

I tried Ireland and Panama and it gave me this really interesting recipe to try! (no guarantee any of the recipes will actually work but still cool nonetheless)

Made it:

New Substack: 5-Senses Sunday

My first Substack Collaboration.

I got to chat with Anna Muckerman, Food journalist, travel writer and video producer based in France about food rituals around the globe and how engaging with our senses improves the way we experience food.

Be sure to like and follow us both over on Substack!

Want it:

Ever hear of Swedish Death Cleaning? Its basically a turbo-charged type of Spring cleaning. Definitely want to start decluttering this Spring/Summer in this more meaningful way.

Fantastic Mother's day gift idea that is truly meaningful and a win-win for the community as well.

Ingredient Spotlight:

Rhubarb

There's more to Rhubarb than just pie!

This vegetable (yes it's a veg and not a fruit!) is very sour and typically cannot be eaten raw. The sourness comes from its high levels of malic and oxalic Acid (so people prone to kidney stones should avoid it).

Rhubarb is high in fiber and a great source of the ever elusive vitamin K1 plus its high in anthocyanins which give the stalks its reddish hue.

Here are some of the ways you can use and cook with Rhubarb (both sweet and savory inspo!)

Extra Bytes:

What I'm reading: Sapiens: A brief history of humankind (just some light reading. lol)

What I'm watching: Shogun (it is so good so far - I was 7 years old when the original came out and it scared the crap out of me - I'm better prepared this time!)

What I'm Listening to: Lots of articles! I love that many online publications have the option of listening to articles in addition to reading them.

What I'm eating: Mafaldine Alfredo with garlicky broccolini and buttery hazelnuts

That's all for me this week!

I hope everyone has a happy and healthy hump day!

Warmly,

Jenny

PS. Love my work and want to support me? Try buying me a coffee! I'd really appreciate it. :-)

Dear Reader My husband and I are leaving for Sweden on Sunday! We're doing a red eye flight and then jumping right in with a water tour of the archipelagos of Stockholm and later in the week, going to the Eurovision lives shows in Malmo. I have to be honest. Traveling often makes me a little stressed as it relates to food. It's not that its always so hard to nourish myself on a trip like this. But with my dietary restrictions (plant-based, dairy free etc) I like to do my due diligence and...

Dear Reader, In 2020, my 2 best friends from High School had an intervention with me. I was spending so much time on my business and my creative goals that I completely neglected them in my earnest quest to build and grow my business. I'm not proud of this. I've always prided myself in my ability to maintain long term and strong friendships. But, I also tend to be hyper-focused and even myopic when I'm passionate about something and have a goal I'm focused on. I knew I needed to find more...
